My Xbox.....

I loved my Xbox 360. At times it helped me escape boredom, burn time, or simply enjoy killing some of my friends in a game over Xbox Live. Yesterday however, all of that changed. I was watching Seinfeld before I had to go to work, when the box froze. I leapt up and turned it off, then on again..... but to no avail. Three flashing red lights were the only life in my beautiful box.

After researching this problem on the internet, I discovered it meant that I had a hardware fault, something that had been happening to many of the first Xbox 360's, due to several unforseen problems that hadn't been discovered in previous extensive product testing. I went to the good ol' filing cabinet and found the receipt from my 360, my 'proof of purchase'. As I had expected, I was 2 months out of the warranty period.

After I awoke from the concussion I recieved after attempting to embed my face into the filing cabinet, I sent word via sms to my friend Adrian. He told me that Xbox had extended warranty in the case of the 'red ring of death' (flashing red lights) situation, and now I still had 22 months left for warranty, and I needn't have damaged the filing cabinet with my head.

So, as I write this, I have just got off the phone with Xbox Customer Support (the best customer service and support from any company I have dealt with), and they are sending me an email with details as to where and how to send my Xbox for repair. However, since I am required to send my 360 away, I will be without it for 6 - 12 weeks. Guess what? The long awaited Halo 3 comes out in just under 4 weeks, meaning when I collect my pre-ordered and pre-paid copy, I'll have to look at it for 2 - 8 weeks. I'll spare you my rage, but don't worry, I have been swearing a lot.

I think I may have to steal Adrian or Nick's 360 for a while.....

Finally, last holidays, part of the dream came true. We put our website on the world wide web. It's called Pariah Productions, and I would love for you all to check it out. Oh, and please feel free to become a member on the forums. If you want the url for the site, its http://www.pariahproductions.net, but just click on the link, its easier!

The webiste has bios, pictures, and all our movies, and a couple of other things. We continually update it, but since we're busy with uni at the moment, no major updates will happen, but in 3 weeks or so we should have 3 more movies up, as well as more pages, such as a guest profile page.

So yeah, Pariah Productions, please check it out!

Eve of the second assessment.....

After assessment one, we concentrated on things like form and content, and as a result I have been trying to improve my blog, flickr account, and delicious account.

In blogger, the work I have done to change the looks of my blog involves a number of things. I altered the html coding in my blogs CSS (cascading style sheet) so that the background colour was changed from light grey to dark gray, so that the main section of the blog and the posts within it stand out more. I changed the colour of the blogger toolbar at the top of the page from blue to silver so it would fit in better with my colour scheme and add to the [hopefully] good aestthetics of my blog. i then changed the sizes of the header of my blog, and the post titles, so that they are more eye-catching and I think that the blog looks better overall as a result. Since the direction I went with my blog was to write posts about things I enjoy or have opinions on, I continued that direction and tried to include some of the more interesting aspects of my life, and more opinionated opinions.

In Flickr, I changed the tags on my pictures so only the pictures of interest to other students had the mpi104-2007, as opposed to before when everything was tagged with mpi104-2007, so this will help the relevance of my pictures. I have uploaded a lot more pictures that I like, so hopefully this will reveal a little bit more about myself, as well as improving the form and content of my site.

In delicious, I have really expanded its contribution to my workflow, and changed it so now rather than just bookmarking main sites I visit, I have bookmarked every site that I regular, and some new ones that I just found really interesting. Again, this should help the content of my account. I have bundled all of my tags so this improves usability and ease of use, as well as the bundles down the side of my page looking cool. Lastly, like in my flickr account, I changed the tags on my bookmarks so only the bookmarks of interest to other students had the mpi104-2007, as opposed to before when everything was tagged with mpi104-2007.

Well.... I have looked at the checklist continously for the past week.... and after assuring myself for the 28321983219th time that I have completed everything on the checklist I'm going to go get some food and some sleep.

I think Edward Norton is one of the most underrated actors ever. Every movie he is in is amazing, his performances are always above the bar and I think anyone who watches Fight Club and American History X will agree. He isn't in as many films as Brad Pitt but I think he is as good as or even better an actor.

Some notable films he has been in are:

The Netherlands.....

As I'm sure all of you would have guessed the first time you laid eyes on me, I'm Dutch.

This means that I enjoy hagelslag, zoute drop, kaas, melk, poffertjes, pannekoek and stuff like that. However I do not like weed or raw herring, but if thats the sort of thing you enjoy... be my guest.

I have spent a considerable bit of my life in The Netherlands and I love it. I will be going back again towards the end of this year.

Pretty much all of my family lives in The Netherlands with the exception of me and my mum. Mum is the only van Dijk to have left the Netherlands and come to Australia, she blames it on momentary madness. I am the only van Dijk to have been born ouside the country as well.

Nu ga ik eten, misschien televisie kijken, zombies zijn lijken.

Visitors to this Blog

It's useful to know how many visitors and views your blog has, because it shows you that people are actually looking at what you are doing. It's nice to see that people are coming to your blog and reading your work, and viewing your pictures and videos. One thing I would like to know is how old my visitors are.

I am using a counter from Sitemeter on my blog, it is the design that has the sitemeter logo, followed by the count. I chose this particular design because I felt it looked good, and it was the option that fit in with my blogs design.

At the moment I have had 126 visitors (exluding an additional 132 visitors before I got the sitemetre counter), an average of 4 visitors per day, with a total of 362 page views. Here is the breakdown of which countries my visitors are coming from:

47% are from Australia
28% are unknown (probably aliens)
13% are from the United States
2% are from Malaysia
2% are from Italy
2% are from the United Kingdom

The last 6% are from Germany, South Africa, Spain and Belgium.

They get to my site mostly through pages in the Blogger website, but also from Myspace. I have also had a fair amount of visitors through links from Google and Technorati. On average they stay for 5 minutes and 10 seconds.

On Flickr, you are also able to see how many views you have had. You are given a total amount of photo views, and below each photo there is an individual view count, and also a comment count. Again, it is nice to see a comment on a photo you have, and to see that people are looking at your photos.

On delicious, I'm not aware of a way you can see how may people view your bookmarks, but I do know that below and to the right of each bookmark there is a counter showing how many other people have saved the same bookmark.

Technorati Revisited

Technorati is a site that primarily functions as a search engine for blogs, but it also enables people who own blogs to 'claim' them, so people who use technorati can see that a blog is your work. This is good, because it's always nice to recieve credit for what you have done.

Technorati is different from google, because the search engine only searches for blogs, rather then every single thing ever mentioned in the history of the universe.

My own personal technorati rank is 483,888th. My authority is 11.

Technorati rank stems from how much authority a page has, ie- something with 1 authority will have a lower rank then something with 2983239482983 authority. Similar to the way that the Prime Minister has more authority then the guitar case to my left.

Authority refers to the amount of sites that link to a page. ie - one link = one authority, so therefore there are 11 sites linking to my blog.

let's start with the bad...

Kylie Minogue. Grr. Go here. You'll see what I mean. Looking at the tacky Kylie site makes me feel as if I'm seeing someones grandmother dressed up to look like a cheap call girl. Not that there's anything wrong with that, if thats the sort of thing that floats your boat, but I hate it. There is nothing about the site I like. Her music plays, which I don't like, the colours don't match, which I don't like, it is confusing and difficult to look at, which I don't like.... the list goes on.

Much of my dislike comes from the fact that I don't like her music, but I think she's a decent person. Still, I feel it's a poor website.

and now the good.....

Linkin Park. Great Musicians, great people, and they are great artists. They participate in the artwork for their albums, and they also manage their own webiste. This is their site. I think it is a really attractive site. It looks clean and pure..... very aesthetically pleasing. Schmiko. Also, among their many attractive links, there is one to 'Stop Global Warming'. Not only good musicians, ambassadors for the planet. I'm glad to see people with money and popularity actually doing something other than buying themselves and their families several GMC four wheel drives so that their maids can drive down the block to Walmart.

Aesthetics - a number of things that contribute to the overall "does this look good" vibe. word y'all.

XML and RSS

XML stands for Extensible Markup Language.

A markup language combines text and extrra information about the text, such as information about the colour or structure of the text.

XML's main purpose is to enable the sharing of data between numerous different systems, especially through the internet.

RSS has three different meanings, which have come about through different versions of RSS. The definitions and corresponding versions are:
- Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)
- Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91, RSS 1.0)
- RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)

RSS is a family of web feed formats used to publish digital content that is often updated, such as internet news, podcasts, and BLOGS!

RSS is like a table of contents. An RSS feed provides a table of contents for a site. It doesn't provide the content, but it links to it.

RSS is important because it allows us to make things such as blogs, and eases the updating and publishing process. It also makes finding what you want to look at on a site much easier.

I love my Guitar

I love my guitar. Well, I love all of my guitars, but I really love my Ibanez RG.

I have had it for 2 years and it is such an awesome guitar. It never goes out of tune thanks to the marvelous technology known as the Floyd Rose bridge, and the fret locks.

It's currently tuned to dropped C, meaning the strings are tuned to C G C F A D (low to high) for people who are or are not aware what that means.

The reason it is tuned to C, is so I can play the music of some of my favourite bands, and also because my band writes and plays music mostly in C.

Some examples of bands that use this tuning are Linkin Park, Killswitch Engage and Disturbed.

Well well well...... well.....

Tomorrow is my 18th birthday. Tomorrow is also my first day back to uni.

What have I done so far?

I started my blog in March. They say dogs and their owners look alike. I think the theory holds true for blogs and their owners too. I love my blog like a son or daughter, but I imagine it is considerably better behaved then a child... although html and other code irritates me sometimes.... I have updated my blog regularly and have enjoyed the chance to express myself in a form that others can also read, and hopefully enjoy.

I listed on technorati and claimed my blog, something I found satisfying, kind of like having a really cool car people like and saying, "Yes, that's right, it's mine.", also, it's nice to have my own little part of the web.

I learnt a basic html coding, enabling me to link to other pages. Since then outside of class I have looked a little more into html, and with a friend I made a website of my own.

I have joined the site Flickr, and have been uploading photos one by one for a while. I like being able to look through other peoples photos, because I think there are some truly breathtaking photos out there, and some funny ones too. I have been uploading some of my favourite photos from the past 2 years of my life, the ones that I find most memorable and interesting, and also a few stupid ones.

I have become a member of Del.icio.us and have been using it daily to easily travel from favourite site to favourite site, and also if I find something I think a friend will like, I save it so that they can look at it later. I find thsi tool very useful because it always assists me in getting to the sites I want to quickly. I have a 3 person network, and 1 fan.

Although I have always been an internet user, I have become more aware of myself as an internet being, and become integrated into the internet in a wider spectrum. I enjoy this greatly, and I can't see myself stopping because its so addictive!

For Blogger, this will be my 20th post. Some of my favourite posts are the I hate terrorism post, the The Law post, and the I hate shops trilogy.

I chose an uncommon template for my blog, and changed the fonts and colours of it so that I thought it looked good and interesting, and I think it is visually pleasing.

I have been watching other blogs, probably one of my favourites is Rasmussen Productions, and have been commenting on them. An example of this is here.

The main tags I have used in blogger (and flickr) are mpi104-2007, music and comedy I believe.....

I think my Blogger, Flickr, and Delicious have 'interestingness', because they reflect a little of myself, who I am, what I like, and what I find interesting. Although I share a few common interests as other people, such as video games, sport, music and the internet, I also do things such as make movies and dance in youtube videos, which I enjoy, and thanks to the internet I have been able to showcase these items to other people, and recieve feedback from them. I find this extremely interesting and rewarding.

I hate pain. I currently am suffering from extreme pain in my back. I have no idea how I did it, but I have had a really sore back for 7 days. It really hurts, and it has gotten so bad I have decided I will go to the doctor. I have never had a problem with my back before, and so this pain is even more crap. I just hope it's nothing to bad and I can continue doing stuff. Wow, very deep aren't I..... so I can continue doing stuff.

I hate pain.

Out of all television shows, Seinfeld is my favourite. I think it is easily the greatest show ever. My favourite episodes are too numerous to list because there isn't a single episode of the show that I don't find immensely entertaining, but some notable ones are 'The Boyfriend' and 'The Subway'.

Although Jerry Seinfeld himself isn't a great actor, he still does a good job and improves throughout the series, and having the excellent acting talents of Jason Alexander, Michael Richards and Julia Louis Dreyfus helped him a lot.

If you want to find out more about seinfeld, you can go to the shows official site, but you will probably already have seen a few shows because most people have. If not, go to civic video or something and hire some seasons out, you owe it to yourself to experience the greatest sitcom of all time.

I don't know about you guys, but me and my friends have the worst luck when it comes to the cops and our cars. Seriously, I don't know if we somehow get it worse but i'd be interested to know, so if you have had bad luck too, please let me know by commenting.

Anyway, I won't mention my friends names but I'll list what's happened to them, and myself of course. Although I seem to be the luckiest out of us...

Friend 1 - $231 fine, 3 points off licence two weeks after getting p plates. One month later, around $570 in fines for negligent driving and speeding, and 4 points off licence putting him on -3. Also ends up in hospital for a while. After getting licence back, loses it again 2 weeks later for drag racing what he thought to be a taxi that turned out to be a police car.

Friend 2 - Caught doing 20 k's over limit in school zone. $231 fine, 3 points off licence. Two months later caught with unrestrained passengers, one of which was in the boot. Two months ago, Speeding by 15 k's, caught on camera. Loses licence.

Friends 3 & 4 - Lose licences for drag racing, street racing, and negligent driving at the same time. Although neither were doing any of the afore mentioned offences. Lots of $$$ in fines.

Friend 5 - Over $1000 in fines for unrestrained passengers.

Friend 6 - Around $150 for not indicating off a roundabout.

Friend 7 - Wheel spins accidentally during rain. $231 fine, loses licence as his passenger was unrestrained.

Friend 8 - Has his licence taken off him by bouncer whilst at a pub. Pulled over later by police and issued $77 fine for not having a licence.

Me - Pulled over for undue noise. $231 fine and 3 points off licence. Testing later showed that exhaust was within legal limits. Appeal denied. Reported doing illegal activity that I had no involvement in whatsoever, had apprehended violence order almost placed on me, and almost went to court and lost my licence. Luckily, I had two witnesses who could prove I was not involved. However, was told by police officer that my car is now being watched, and I have been pulled over often since. I hate to think what's going to happen to me once I turn 21 and start driving my dream car! oh well.....

Well well well, i finally got my sound system.
Here's how it went when I went in there on friday...

"Hi I was wondering if my order had come in yet, its a Logitech z5400."
"Oh ok..... um...... hm...... (typing in computer)......what's your name?"
"David van Dijk."
"Ok........what's your phone number?"

After I tell him my phone number, he spends 15 minutes humming and ahhh-ing and hmmm-ing at the computer screen, before saying....

"No sorry it isn't in yet. When were you told it would be in?"

I expain the whole saga to him...

"Oh ok. Well try again in a week I guess."
"No sorry, I was told that two weeks ago. Could you check out the back for it please?"
"Well, I guess I could if you want me to, but it's not on the computer so it won't be there."
"Could you check?"
"Ok then I'll go check."

2 minutes later, he walks back in carrying my sound system. I had already paid for the system in full when I ordered it, and then he tells me I still have to pay for it. I tell him I'd already paid, so he goes and talks to his manager. 20 minutes later and I'm being offered all sorts of warranties but all I want to do is go home and listen to the system, so I do.

I'm glad that's over.

So, today, I rang the shop about the sound system again, here's how it went...
"No sorry mate it isn't in yet."
"Well can you ring the company to find out whats going on?"
"Yeah, I could do that."
"Ok."
"What's your name?"
"David van Dijk."
"Oh, right. Ok, I'll call you back."

20 minutes later...

"Hello David?"
"Yeah..."
"Um, Logitech said they never recieved our order."
"Oh, ok." (subtext - You are f^$*%ing kidding me. I am so close to murdering every employee in that shop of yours....)
"So, they said they'll send it down asap, so it will be here on friday."
"Ok."
"If not friday, monday."
"Ok see you."
"Bye mate."

We have completed the Pariah Productions website! It contains information about the group, short biographies, links to our related and associated sites, and of course pictures and videos we have taken and made!

We used Dreamweaver to make the site, and at the moment we are just finding a good host to...well host, the site! Once actually on the internet, which could be today, or next week, I'll post the url on here, so please check it out!

Sure they enable the purchase of warez and goods, but argh. I hate shops. Why do I hate shops? I am never told the truth, ever. For example, I ordered in a sound system - "That will be in next monday, so come in then"
"Oh ok, thankyou."
I go in the next monday....
"No it isn't in yet, did someone tell you it might be in today?"
"Yeah, they said to come in today and it would be here."
"Oh ok, well usually it could be a week either side of what they tell you."

(So according to the salesman, my sound system could have come in the day i ordered it, making instantaneous delivery possible)

So here I am, still waiting. I hate shops.

New music videos

Two new videos have been completed and are now up on youtube. The videos are "Real Numa Numa" and "The Bomb". Real numa numa can be viewed on the video link bar at the top right of this page. The Bomb can be found here on youtube! That brings our videos available for viewing on the internet up to a total of six, and our total number of videos up to eighteen!

Speaking of 18, I turn 18 on the 1st of May! Can't wait!

The Chaser's War on Everything

The Chasers War on Everything would probably have to be my favourite television show, despite the numerous american sitcoms. It is extremely relevant and raises some important points in its satirical presentation. Despite being left wing, it isn't completely biased, and I always enjoy a laugh at the expense of the 'noble', 'intelligent' and 'honoured' leaders of our government. (note: if it was entirely left wing, i wouldn't mind because I support Labour.) The photo above is of Chris Taylor, taken from a party I was at in Sydney. He is probably the leading man of the show, however Craig Reucassel, Andrew Hansen, Chas Licciardello, and Julian Morrow are also pretty much equally as important.

I hate not understanding things.

I really hate the fact that I have so many questions that I don't have answers for. The main one being about the meaning of life, (I am constantly told the answer is eleven, but I refuse to believe this) but also trivial things like why animals do what they do. I mean, look at the picture of the cat above. Why did it do that? On youtube there are entire videos of cats doing weird things, and I have no idea why they do them. My dog too, makes noises and sometimes randomly attacks my face at odd and sometimes inconvenient times.

I guess I will just have to keep searching for the answers.

I think it's time for me to jump on the anti terror bandwagon, after all, according to the esteemed Bush and Howard governments it is all around me. If I go shopping, terrorism. If I go to see a movie, terrorism. If I play ping pong, terrorism. If I join a militant group, terro... actually scratch that one.

It's really scary. We're either on orange or red alert every day, the threat is so real. I recommend that from now on, if you are suspicious in any way, of anyone, or anything, call the national security hotline. You can find the phone number here on the national security website, as well as a lot of other propaganda... i mean truthful facts.

Come on Australia, catch a terrorist.

Soccer is Awesome

I really like soccer. This has nothing to do with film, mulitimedia, or television, but I love soccer. I have been playing since I was around 13. I play for Henwood Park. I follow Arsenal in the English Premier League. I also follow Barcelona in the Primera. I also follow David Beckham in whichever team he is in because he is a great player, and is probably one of the nicest down to earth people I know.

The Law.

Don't you just love the Law? I don't. Sure it's great to be able to punish people who deserve it, but the problem is, half the time people either don't get punished at all, or the sentence they get is completely ridiculous.

For example, I read in a newspaper today that a 70 year old man shot his neighbour no less than 8 times, due to a noise complaint. Despite people at the scene picking the victim up and attempting to carry him to safety, the man just kept reloading and shooting at them.

The man was given a suspended sentence, which means nothing happens to him unless he does it again. How is that justice? He got to keep the gun and everything.

Then you look at things like David Hicks, or immigrants being held in detention centres in Australia, who have lost up to ten years of their life because they wanted to leave the violence of their homelands and try for a better future. The government is very clever in finding many loopholes in laws to make sure they can hold whoever they want indefinitely.

If you look at traffic offences, there was a girl in my year at high school who was caught driving 80 in a 50 zone, with three people bonnet surfing. She got a warning. She should have recieved thousands of dollars in fines, and lost her licence for 6 to 12 months. Oh, and her Dad is a cop.

Then you look at me, I was driving at 20 along the main street of wagga, when I was pulled over by the police. Here's how it went...

(Cop begins writing a ticket), I say..
"Excuse me, am I in trouble?"
(Cop sneers and nods)
"Sorry, but what did I do?"
"Look mate, we both know what you did."
"I'm sorry but I really don't."
"Look, you were just unlucky to get caught that's all."
"What did I do?"
"It's called undue noise."
"Excuse me?"
"Undue noise. Your exhaust is way too loud."

So i find out that I just got fined $231 and lost 3 points off my licence. I looked up the fine and saw that the noise had to be above 90 decibels to be offensive, so I had the car tested. It was under. I appealed the fine but I was told that they didn't have the authority to issue just a warning or offer leniance. My question is, if the authority in charge of traffic infringements and fines doesn't have the authority in regards to traffic infringements and fines, then who does?

Pariah Productions is a film production group made by David van Dijk, Don Nordblom, and Sam Goodwin. The group first began in 2002. Together David and Don have made numerous productions ranging from music videos to short films and feature films. David and Don write and direct all aspects of pre production and post production, including editing and product release. Sam makes up the technical side of Pariah Productions, and handles things such as compressing videos for internet use, and encrypting movies for public release.
